Kondratieff
The (hi)story:
Nikolai Dmitriyevich Kondratieff (1892-??) started his career an economist in Russia. As head of the Conjuncture Institute in Moscow, he proposed a theory that Western capitalist economies have long term (40-60 year) cycles of boom followed by depression. These cycles are now called "Kondratieff waves". The supporters of the theory have identified the following Kondratieff waves:- The Industrial Revolution (1780-1840)
- The Second Kondratieff Wave (1840-1900)
- The Third Kondratieff Wave (1900-1950)
- The Fourth Kondratieff Wave (1950-1980?)
- The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (1980-2004)
- The New 'Punk, Electro, Indie, Rock 'n' Roll, Disco, Glam, New Wave & Whatever' Wave (2005-the end of times)
The theory is not accepted by many modern economists and, among ones who accept it, there is no universal agreement about the start and the end years of particular waves. It is thought that the Western world is either at the end of the Fourth Wave (which will end by 2010) or at the beginning at the Fifth wave (which has started at 1990 or later).
During the Great Depression, his theory suggested that the Depression in the West would eventually correct itself and the Western Economy would again prosper. Stalin did not support this theory. Kondratieff was arrested 1930. Stalin took a keen personal interest in Kondratieff's trial. As a distinguished economist with an international reputation Kondratieff was considered a threat to the regime. Kondratieff was forced to confess to imaginary crimes. Convicted as a "kulak-professor", he was banished to Suzdal in 1932.
After this long (forced) hibernation Kondratieff surprisingly returns in 2005 and launched a new career as DJ or plattenaufleger (record player). Instead of economic theorizing and boring statistics, it is all about pulsating beats, catchy songs and rocking tunes now. For many years he has been spinning at Vitamine ACU (Friday) nights popular alternative dance-able songs from the last 3 and a half decade. He has his a monthly Korsakoff (Thursday) night - Was Ist Ist - and was co-hosting a monthly (Saturday) night - Gewoon Potpourri - at Café Mono where everything goes. Every now and then he plays other venues or parties.
